As many of you know, Gift Aid is a great government scheme that means charities can claim back 25p for every £1 donated. What you may not know, is that charities are also able to claim Gift Aid as part of a crowdfunding campaign. For those that are eligible, it’s a really simple process and could help you raise a significant amount more for your cause. For example, if you're crowdfunding campaign raises £10,000, you could increase that to £12,500 with Gift Aid!
To claim Gift Aid, you need to set your category to ‘Charity’. Then, when editing rewards, you can tick the box to say that the reward is eligible for Gift Aid.
Eight steps to claiming Gift Aid as a crowdfunding charity...
You should make sure that your organisation is set up to be eligible to receive Gift Aid as soon as possible. You may also need to register with the Charity Commission if your annual income is greater than £5,000.
4. When editing your project, tick the Gift Aid box for eligible rewards.
The following declaration will then appear to backers who select Gift Aid when they pledge. You can edit this if necessary.
“I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for the current tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all the charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for the current tax year. I understand that other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify. I understand the charity will reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that I have given.”
5. Tick the address box for eligible rewards too.
This is because you’ll need the names and postal addresses of your backers in order to claim Gift Aid.
7. Download your backers list.
This is the names and details of those who pledged on your project. Those that selected Gift Aid when pledging will appear within this.
