Communities Fund core costs vs project costs

Communities Fund eligibility criteria

The Communities Fund supports organisations and projects working to improve financial wellbeing and drive climate action in their local communities.

  • Financial wellbeing – helping people feel more secure and in control of their financial futures

  • Climate action – taking action for climate and nature through projects that help communities prevent, prepare for, and adapt to the impacts of our changing climate

If your core mission is aligned with either of these areas, you can apply for core costs.

If your core mission is not directly aligned, but you’re planning a project that clearly addresses either climate action or financial wellbeing – and connects with your wider work – you can apply for project-specific funding.

Core costs (also typically known as overheads or indirect costs) refer to the essential expenses that an organisation incurs to operate effectively, regardless of specific projects or programmes. These costs are not tied to a particular activity but are necessary to keep the organisation running.

Please confirm which type of funding you are applying for:

Core costs – available for organisations whose overall mission aligns directly with one or both of the Communities Fund themes: climate action or financial wellbeing. This can include running costs such as staff, rent, or operational expenses.

Project costs – for organisations whose mission may not directly align with the themes, but who are planning a specific project that clearly addresses climate action or financial wellbeing, and connects with your wider work.
